Do it now — a Suno Experiment

Recently I started playing around with Suno, the generative AI Music platform. I have not yet decided exactly how I feel about the power and ethics of this, but it is an extraordinary way to bring songs to life.

I wrote this song, Do it now, back in 2004 and sang it at a couple of open mics, but otherwise it has pretty much remained unheard outside my lounge room.

I have played this Suno performance for quite a few people now, and the reaction ranges from pretty good to gobsmacked! So, as part of my experimenting and exploring this technology, I have placed it up here on my site. Some of you will likely enjoy it, others may not.

I have made my living on creative development — board game design and learning and development products (Wildstone PKG) — so I am very close to the implications of all of this. But I want to be part of the discussion on the application of AI to creative industries and the whole world, and one way is to make songs like this one public.

I have heard the scientist Max Tegmark say about AI that it’s like “We are running towards the edge of the cliff and the view just keeps getting better”. I think I agree with this. So, my new found dilemma is that the view for the potential of this technology for songwriters has me jumping out of my skin! And the cliff? 🙁

It’s not yet released to streaming, so just here for now. Let me know your thoughts.

Do it now

Words and music by Craig Andrew Browne (c) 2004

Have you wondered how your life would be different if

You jumped up and did that one thing

You’ve been searching your soul for the courage to try

And you know could change everything?

I’ve seen the look in your eyes more than once more than twice

It’s uncanny but you know it some-how

So put your hand on your heart.  Feel your butterflies’ wings

And step up boy – do it now!  Step up boy – do it now!

Oh the world overflows with those that just talk

Most living in permanent stall

It’s never too late but don’t wait ’till the end

You’ll look back and see you’ve wasted it all.

I know it’s easy to doubt that you’ve got what it takes

But don’t worry, ’cause you’ll find it some-how

So don’t listen to the ones who say you’re fine as you are

Step up boy – do it now!   Yeh step up boy – do it now!

Yeh step up boy-oy – do it now!

Oh day in day out you keep chasin’ your tail to get through

Doin’ a job that’s acceptable but not really you.

When will you get up and take the first steps in your dance

Life ain’t that long and it may only grant you one chance.

So, wonder how your life will be different when

You jump up and do that one thing

You’ve been searching your soul for the courage to try

And you know will change everything?

I’ve seen the look in your eyes more than once more than twice

It’s uncanny but you know it some-how

So put your hand on your heart…

So put your hand on your heart.  Feel your butterflies’ wings

And step up boy – do it now!   Yeh step up boy – do it now!

Yeh step up boy-oy – do it now!

Oh day in day out you keep chasin’ your tail to get through

Doin’ a job that’s acceptable but not really you.

When will you get up and take the first steps in your dance

Life ain’t that long and it may only grant you …

When will you get up and take the first steps in your dance?

Oh life ain’t that long and it may only grant you this chance.
